Presently Goa has six wildlife sanctuaries at Bondla (8 square km), Mollem (Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary covering 133 square km), Cotigao (86 square km), Chorao Island (Salim Ali bird sanctuary covering 1.78 square km of mangroves in the Mandovi river), Madei (208 square km, proposed), Netravali (211 square km: proposed) and Mollem national park (107 square km). Together they cover an area of 755 square km, or around 60 per cent of forest area and 20 per cent of the geographical area of the state.

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary

It is 38 Km from Margao. More than a sanctuary it is an ideal jungle resort and a major attraction for school going children and nature lovers. Its mini zoos, sprawling deer park in natural habitat, botanical and rose gardens attract people throughout the year.

 

Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary covers 240 sq km of which forest-clad sloes of Western ghats and its valleys and is the biggest of the three sanctuaries of Goa. The sanctuary is rich in wildlife. It is a paradise for bird watchers. Besides flora and fauna there are many important geological and historical features in this sanctuary.



 

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

The second largest of the three wildlife sanctuaries in Goa, with an area of 105 sq. Km It is covered with dense forest and varied wildlife, avian fauna and reptiles. The ancient Jeevottam Partagal Math, noted for Vedic studies, lies in the vicinity of the sanctuary.  

Even Morjim has turned out to be a paradise for the flippered visitors; Galgibaga also became a protected destination for the flippered visitors. Thus Goa possesses excellent flora and fauna making it a destination also for the nature lovers.
