Margao Goa

The second largest among the cities & townships in Goa, Margao ( also called Madgaon) is located in the hinterland of South Goa district in Salcete taluka. An important commercial and industrial center, Margao is a popular tourist destination as well, famous for its beautiful gardens, parks and grand old mansions and modern buildings.

History has it that in medieval times, Margao in Goa flourished as an important agricultural and religious centre, with dharamshalas and marvelous temples adorning the town. During the 17th century, the Portuguese invaders destroyed several Hindu temples in Margao. The Catholic churches however survive, lending a distinct Portuguese flavor and an old world charm to the city.

Tourist Attractions in Margao:

Praca Jorge Baretto, the main square in Margao city, is surrounded by numerous restaurants and office buildings. The Municipal building and Library are located to the south of the square.

The historical Church square or Largo de Igreja, Margao's prime tourist attraction lies just a few kilometers to the north of the Praca Jorge Baretto. The erstwhile colonial quarter of Margao, the church square is surrounded by marvelous old mansions on three sides and by the famous Church of the Holy Spirit on the fourth side.

Towards the northeast of the Largo de Igreja lies the renowned House of Seven Gables or Sat Banzam Gor. A lovely Portuguese mansion, it was commissioned in 1790.

Another major highlight of Margao is the Calcada de Nossa Senhora de Piedade, which leads up to Monte Hill. The spot offers breathtaking view of the Salcette countryside and Margao cityscape

Margao flaunts an excellent transport system, being linked by rail to major parts of India and Mormugao harbor and the National Highways. Besides, regular bus services are available from Panaji and Vasco da Gama to reach the city.
