Kunbi dance:
This folk dance of Goa gives you a glimpse of an ancient way of life. The Kunbis being one of the earliest people to settle in Goa, the dance still retains the original traditions of the people. The dance dates back to the era before Portuguese rule in Goa. The Kunbi dance is mainly performed by women, with fast yet elegant steps.
Romat dance:
This is a Goan folk dance and procession that is performed in the month of March (at the Singma festival). The objective of the Romat dance is a form of thanksgiving, expressed through a celebratory dance and march routine. Banners, umbrellas, batons and sticks are often used during the march. It is accompanied by the sound of drums and tashas (musical instrument). Groups of people, dressed in colorful attire proceed towards the temple or to the local landlord's house. This dance is referred to as "Mell" in the central parts of Goa.
Lamp dance:
This Goan folk dance is also performed during the Shigma festival. Slow dancing begins to the sound of samael, cymbal, ghumat and harmonium. The most spectacular thing is the balancing of brass lamps on the head and the hands, from which the name is derived. This is mainly performed in South and Central Goa.
Goff dance:
This is also performed during the Shigmo festival. The dance is a celebration after the harvest and involves skillful movements with colorful bands attached to a center point. You will see the patterns of a braid being made and unmade during the course of the dance.
Mussal dance:
This folk dance is performed during the carnival, and carries the heritage of centuries old tradition. The dance was part of the celebration by the "Kshatriyas" after the victory of King Harihar over the Cholas in the 14th century. The name comes from the pestles that were used for fighting.
