Goa is famous for its festivals and carnivals. No other place in India can organize and celebrate carnivals the way Goa can. History of Mardi Gras Carnival in Goa
The Carnival of Mardi Gras dates back to the period when Goa was under the rule of the famous King Momo. Ever since then, the Mardi Gras Carnival has been celebrated every year during the months of February or March. The carnival is organized for three days just before the season of the Lent. This is because the season of Lent is the period when most Catholics remain on a fast. The celebrations start on the Fat Saturday, known as Sabado Gordo and finishes on Fat Tuesday known as Shrove Tuesday.

The Mardi Gras Carnival is celebrated with a lot of pomp and splendor. People come together from all parts of the state to take part in the dancing, cheering, singing and merry making on the streets. Masks of all shapes, sizes and themes are the unique feature of Mardi Gras carnivals in Goa, as in many parts of the world. The gaily decorated and colorful carnival floats are a real treat for the eyes. There is a lot of feasting and drinking that adds to the feel good atmosphere all around the state. Residents visit each other's homes and are treated with homemade delicacies.
