Terekhol Fort in Goa

Situated atop a hill with the Arabian Sea and the river Terekhol flowing past, against a backdrop of greenery, stands the Terekhol Fort in Goa. This fort of Goa is witness to many important historical events. Today, the Terekhol Fort, Goa has been converted into a luxury hotel - 'The Terekhol Fort Heritage'.

History:

The Terekhol Fort in Goa was built in the 17th century by Maharaja Sawant Bhonsle, who was the Raja of Sawantwadi. In 1764 the fort was taken over by Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida, the Portuguese viceroy. After capturing the fort, he rebuilt it in the same year. Officially the fort became a part of Goa in 1788.

The eventful history of the Terekhol Fort in Goa does not end with its capture by the Portuguese. In 1825, the fort was used to fight against the Portuguese battalion, by the then viceroy of Goa, Dr. Bernado Peres da Silva. This was a rebellion against the Portuguese rule. However, the fort was once again recaptured by the Portuguese.

The fort houses a century old church - St Anthony, which is mostly closed throughout the year. It is opened for the public during certain festivals, usually in the month of May.

Location:

The Terekhol Fort, with its turrets and a church within its compound offers a panoramic view of the river and the Arabian Sea. The serenity of the place is complimented by the sea and the river. It is the view and the architectural style that draws tourists to this place.

The fort is located in the Pernem Taluka of North Goa. It is situated on the northern tip of the state, close to the mouth of the Terekhol River.

Access:

You can take a car ferry from the hamlet of Querim to reach the Terekhol Fort. The Hamlet of Querim is located 42 km from Panjim, the capital city of Goa. You can also catch a taxi or auto rickshaw from anywhere in North Goa to reach the fort.
