Shri Mangesh Temple Goa

Shri Mangesh Temple can be termed as one of the most important among the scores of temples that are situated in Goa. Shri Mangesh Temple in Goa was originally located in the village of Kushasthali. In 1560, fearing the destruction of the temple in the hands of the Portuguese, the Mangesh Linga located within the temple was shifted to its current location at the village of Mangeshi. The original temple was later destroyed by the Portuguese in the year 1567.

The Mangesh Linga is considered as a form of Lord Shiva. When the Mangesh Linga was re-established in the village, a simple construction was made as the temple holding the deity. The current elaborate structure of the temple was built around 150 years later when the Marathas were ruling the area.

The Shri Mangesh Temple, Goa, is considered as one of the richest and most famous temples in Goa. The architecture of the temple is quite unique and attractive. One can clearly see the influences of the Muslim and Christian architecture in the temple. The temple itself sits atop a hill nestled in between wide green farmlands that offers a peaceful and serene ambiance to the devotees who visit the temple every morning and evening to offer their prayers and seek the blessings of their lord.

The attention given to each detail during construction can be seen everywhere at the site, especially the beautifully carved pillars located in the temple premises. There is also a statue of Nandi - the Bull, which is considered as the vehicle on which Lord Shiva travels. Also to be seen is the large water tank located in the temple. The water tank is said to be the oldest part of Shri Mangesh Temple.

A number of small shrines dedicated to other gods are also located on the premises of the temple. Mulakeshwsar, Kala Bhairav, Laxminarayan, Virabhadra and Shanta Durga all have their own shrines.

The main festivals celebrated at Shri Mangesh Temple in Goa include Ramanavami, Anant Vritotsava, Diwali, Akshaya Tritiya, Dussera, Magh Pournima and the three day zatra of Shri Mangesh.
